How do I run online tutoring lessons for students with ADHD? (Or: what makes a virtual classroom good for attention-differing learners)
Yes — independent tutors work with students who have ADHD every day, and the workflow works online, but a 45-minute video call is one of the harder environments an attention-differing learner will sit in. What the pedagogy asks for is unchanged from an in-person session: clear structure, short work intervals, movement between them, immediate and salient reinforcement, low-friction transitions, and a parent kept in the loop. What changes online is how you deliver each of those through a screen that also happens to be one browser tab away from every distraction the internet has ever offered. A virtual classroom fit for tutoring students with ADHD needs a shared surface where the student is doing, not watching (hands moving, tokens dragging, decisions being made) — not just a video feed and a screen share. It needs a rewards mechanic you can trigger at exactly the moment effort happens (not "at the end of the lesson"). It needs a way to bring the student's real learning material into the same tab so they don't leave the room to find it. And it needs enough restraint in its own interface that the platform itself isn't the fifth distraction.
What "online tutoring for ADHD students" is (and what it isn't)
The reader we're writing for is a tutor who's already working with — or about to start working with — a student who has ADHD, formally identified or clearly showing attention-and-executive-function differences in the way they engage with a lesson. What this page is not:
- Diagnostic content. We don't help parents decide whether their child has ADHD; we don't list DSM criteria; we don't recommend evaluations. That's the work of a clinician. If a parent is asking whether their child has ADHD, point them at a paediatrician, psychiatrist, or educational psychologist — that referral is worth more than any lesson plan.
- Medical advice. Medication questions belong with the prescribing physician, not the tutor. If a family asks whether their child should be on medication, or how it interacts with tutoring, the honest answer is "that's a conversation for your doctor" — not something to weigh in on from your side of the screen.
- Special-education-law advice. IEPs, 504 plans, EHCPs, SEND provisions, and the equivalents in other countries are formal legal instruments and vary by jurisdiction. If the family has one, ask to read it and let it inform your lesson; don't advise on whether they should get one.
- ADHD coaching. Coaching adults (or older teenagers) on managing life with ADHD — job scheduling, medication logistics, self-advocacy — is its own trained discipline. This page is about academic tutoring for school-age learners with ADHD; not the same thing.
What actually changes when the lesson moves online
Tutors who've moved ADHD-heavy caseloads online report the same three constraints in the first month or two:
- The screen is the distraction. In-person, "look at me" or "look at this book" is a physical redirect. Online, the student's attention has an infinite alternative one tab away, one notification away, one YouTube autoplay away. Your platform can help or hurt here. A tool that keeps the lesson content inside the classroom (whiteboard, shared canvas, cobrowser to a specific site) does better than one that forces the student to leave the tab to open a resource, then not come back.
- Sustained attention windows are shorter than the lesson. An ADHD 9-year-old's attention on a screen-based drill is often 5-10 minutes before the mind wanders. The lesson isn't going to fit in one 45-minute attention block; it's going to fit in four or five 8-10-minute blocks with transitions between them. Your platform has to support that transition without kicking anyone out of the room or losing the previous canvas state.
- Time blindness compounds online. ADHD students often struggle to feel the passage of time. In a physical room you have posture, movement, and ambient cues; on a screen, the room looks the same at minute 3 and minute 30. If the student doesn't know "how much longer" or "how many more of these," they'll disengage before they can name why. Explicit structure — visible progress, count-down of remaining tasks, a stated "we'll do three of these, then a break" — matters more online than it did in person.
Structuring the online session for shorter attention windows
Most ADHD-informed teaching guides converge on the same shape: short work intervals, frequent transitions, movement between them, immediate salient reinforcement, and a visible sense of "how much is left." Translated to a 45-minute online lesson, a working template looks something like:
- Explicit start ritual (2 min). Same opening every session — "we're going to do four things today, then two minutes of playground." Say the four things. This is not filler; it's the executive-function scaffolding that lets the student walk in without having to invent structure. Some tutors write the four things on the whiteboard as a visible checklist the student can watch cross off.
- First work interval (8-10 min). The hardest cognitive work — new content, difficult drill, unfamiliar problem — goes first, while attention is freshest. Keep it interactive: the student is dragging, typing, clicking, choosing. Passive watching in the first block wastes the best attention of the session.
- Movement / attention reset (1-2 min). Genuinely move. Stand, stretch, walk to a wall and back, do five jumping jacks, sky-write the tricky word. Do not replace this with "quick brain question" — the point is physical, not cognitive. Some tutors use the Playground here (a short "walk to the sign, come back" with the student's avatar) because it's low-stakes movement inside the same tab and doesn't risk the student wandering off the lesson.
- Second work interval (8-10 min). Different modality from the first — if the first was verbal and analytic, this one is visual and manipulative (or vice versa). The shift in mode is itself a re-engagement lever; the same student who fell off a listening-heavy task at minute 12 will lean back in for a drag-and-drop token task at minute 15.
- Movement / attention reset (1-2 min). Same as above. Yes, again.
- Third work interval (6-8 min). Practice and consolidation of what was taught in intervals one and two, at a lower difficulty than the introduction. Attention is thinner by now; drop the cognitive load and increase the doing.
- Wrap and reward (5 min). Recap the four things. Award the reinforcement you promised at the start. Preview one thing to do this week. End on a warm, specific "here's what you did well today" — that specificity is what the student takes into the interval before your next session.
The template is a starting point, not a script. Younger students (age 6-8) usually need 5-6 minute intervals with more breaks. Older students (age 13+) can often hold 12-15 minute intervals and get restless if you break them too often — read the room. The point isn't the exact minutes; the point is that the shape has intervals-and-breaks rather than being a single continuous block.
Distraction management (the environment, the device, the tabs)
Half of "keeping a student engaged online" is removing the alternatives. A few concrete moves that pay off:
- Agree on the environment with the parent before lesson one. A door that closes. A screen the student uses only for the lesson if possible (or at least a clean desktop before the call). Phone put in another room during the session (this is often the single biggest lever with older students). Younger siblings' whereabouts pre-negotiated. None of this is your job to police mid-lesson; all of it is your job to set expectations for at the start.
- Full-screen the classroom. If your platform supports full-screen mode, use it. It reduces the visible "escape" surface — the bookmarks bar, the other tabs, the clock in the taskbar — and it visually commits the student's device to the lesson. - Close notification-heavy apps on the student's device. This is a parent-side ask, but a valuable one. Discord, iMessage, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube — all designed to pull attention. Ideally quit before the session, at minimum on Do Not Disturb. For a middle-schooler, this is not optional.
- Use the cobrowser instead of asking the student to open a link. The reinforcement pattern that works with ADHD learners is well-documented across teaching guides: it needs to be immediate (delayed rewards do very little), salient (small text on a page won't register; visible / auditory / animated will), variable (a predictable one-per-correct schedule becomes wallpaper within a few sessions), and effort-based (rewarding "correct" only misses the harder work of persisting through an incorrect attempt). If any of those are missing, the mechanic stops carrying weight and you're back to relying on the student's baseline attention to hold the lesson together.
Translated online, the mechanic that supports this pattern is a small, frequent, teacher-controlled reward currency you can trigger without leaving the lesson flow. - It's visible. A number that goes up on the screen. Some students will glance at it after every drop; some will forget it exists for 20 minutes and then be pleased to discover it grew. Both work. What doesn't work is a rewards system the student can't see happening.
- It's optional. If a specific student — usually an older teenager — reads the gems as infantilising, don't use them. For a 15-year-old working on SAT prep, a visible ADHD-friendly reinforcement mechanic might be your enthusiastic voice ("nice — that was a good attempt"), the visible checklist of "three left, two left, one left" on the whiteboard, and the concrete "we'll end 5 minutes early if we get through these" — no gems required. The mechanic is a tool, not the whole strategy.
None of this replaces the tutor's live warmth — the specific, timed "that was a good try" that no platform can deliver for you. It's a lightweight second channel that carries some of the reinforcement load between your verbal moments.
Keeping the student doing (not watching)
The single strongest engagement lever for ADHD learners online is minimising the passive-watching share of the lesson. Every minute the student is dragging, clicking, drawing, choosing, or typing is a minute their attention is anchored to the screen; every minute they're watching you talk is a minute their attention is trying to leave. ADHD tutoring at any age involves the parent more than a neurotypical caseload does — because the routine around the lesson (getting the student to the desk on time, phone put away, materials ready) is often the bottleneck, and because the retention story runs on the parent seeing progress. A few moves that reduce parent-side friction:
- Set the pre-lesson ritual with the parent, not the student. "5 minutes before the session, phone in the kitchen, water on the desk, headphones on if in a shared room" — this is the parent's job to enforce, not yours to negotiate at minute 1. Send it once in writing, refer back to it if it slips. The tutor's job starts when the student is at the desk; the parent's job is getting them there.
- Send a specific — not generic — recap after each session. "We worked on multiplication of two-digit numbers today. He got the concept solidly by the end. He struggled with keeping the columns aligned — practice on graph paper this week, five problems." That's a recap a parent can act on. "We had a great lesson!" is not. - Handle "he doesn't want to come today" without escalating. Every ADHD-heavy caseload has these calls. Options that work: shorten the lesson to 20 minutes and end on a win rather than skipping; move to a lower-friction activity (playground time attached to a light drill); occasionally, when the family judges it right, skip and reschedule without penalty. What doesn't work is a rigid "the lesson is 45 minutes or we lose the slot." If your cancellation policy doesn't have room for this, ADHD families will churn out.

Honest limits — what Koala Go doesn't do (and what else you'll want)
Frank about the gaps, because ADHD caseloads run long and small mismatches compound:
- iPad experience is rougher than desktop. Koala Go runs in an iPad browser and many students use it that way, but the drag-and-drop feel and pen precision are best on a laptop with a mouse or a stylus. If the student is doing detailed work on a first-generation iPad without a stylus, expect it to be workable but not great.
- Stability on unstable connections. Real-time collaborative environments are more sensitive to a bad Wi-Fi moment than plain video calls are. A wired connection on the tutor side (Ethernet beats Wi-Fi) reduces the hiccups; families on weaker home internet will still notice them.
- No built-in attention analytics. Some tutors ask whether the platform tracks the student's attention (eye position, tab-focus, keystroke patterns). Koala Go does not. A short decision rule for when this workflow fits
- Are the students you'd serve able to sit through a full 45 minutes of anything? Not "with concentration" — literally, in a chair, in front of a screen, for 45 minutes. If the answer is no even before you factor in the lesson itself, shorten the session to 25-30 minutes rather than trying to force a longer format that will fail on retention. Short sessions that end well beat long sessions that end badly.
- Can your current or intended platform reliably do drag-and-drop tokens, live shared control of a webpage, and instantly-triggerable visible reinforcement? If yes, the workflow translates. If no — if the tool is a video call with a static whiteboard on top — the "student is doing" piece breaks and you're left with 45 minutes of passive watching.
- Is the family on board with the environment prep? Phone-away, door-closed, notifications-off. If the family can't or won't hold that boundary at home, you're not going to fix it from your side of the screen. Make the ask, honour the "no", and reset your expectations for that specific student.
- Are you willing to hold the parent-recap cadence that makes the retention math work? Two-sentence specific recap after every session. Short recorded clip when there's something worth showing. If you're not, ADHD families will drift out — not because the tutoring stopped working, but because the parent stopped seeing that it was working.
